You’ve Been Working on It… but What IS It? Why Brand Clarity Matters

Have you ever asked somebody what they do, and by the time they finished explaining it, you were like… okay, but what do you actually DO? 😂

Now, before we start thinking about who that person is… have you read your own bio lately?

Because sometimes we’re so close to what we’re building that we don’t realize how much we’re expecting people to figure out on their own. You know what you mean by “helping women step into their next level.” But the woman reading that might be wondering… next level of WHAT, friend? My business? My faith? My finances?

You can know exactly what you mean and still leave people confused.

If the message isn’t clear, how will people respond?

In 1 Corinthians 14:7–9, Paul talks about musical instruments and how people need to hear distinct notes to recognize what’s being played. He asks how anyone would know to prepare for battle if the trumpet’s call was unclear.

He’s teaching about understandable speech and building up the church. But that picture gives us something to consider about how we communicate our businesses too…

If people can’t understand the message, how will they know how to respond?

We want people to book. Buy. Sign up. Share our content with somebody who needs us. But can they explain what we do well enough to even tell a friend?

Think about someone landing on your website or social media page for the first time. They haven’t been in your brainstorming sessions. They haven’t heard you explain your vision to your best friend. All they have is what you’ve put in front of them.

Can they recognize who you help, what you help them accomplish, and whether it’s something they need?

Polished confusion is still confusion

And listen… you can have a beautiful website, a logo you LOVE, and captions that sound like you hired a whole marketing department. But if somebody still can’t tell who you help or what you help them accomplish, there’s work to do.

That’s what I mean when I say polished confusion is still confusion.

AI can make a sentence sound impressive. You still have to decide whether that sentence actually says something. “Empowering purpose-driven visionaries to unlock limitless possibilities” sounds important… but baby, are we selling bookkeeping or life coaching? 😂

This is why you’ll hear me say clarity before creativity. The decisions you make about your audience, your offer, and your message give your visuals and content something meaningful to communicate.

When those decisions are unclear, you can spend hours changing colors, rewriting captions, and asking ChatGPT for another version… and still struggle to explain what you do.

Clarity is part of how we serve people

Getting clear about your message is part of caring for what you’re building and the people you want to serve.

You want someone to recognize, “Oh… she helps with the exact thing I’ve been struggling with.”

That starts with language they can understand. If you’re a bookkeeper, tell them whose books you manage and what you help them get in order. If you’re a coach, explain what you help someone work through and what they’re working toward.

There’s room for your personality, your faith, and your bigger vision in that conversation. But people still need to understand the actual help you offer.

Your message should give people enough clarity to decide whether to take the next step with you.

Find your next step with the Clarity Quiz

That’s one of the reasons I created my free Clarity Quiz.

It’s 20 questions to help you take an honest look at where your brand is right now. You’ll get a starting point based on your answers, a quick win, and an actionable next step… so you can give your attention to something specific instead of feeling like you need to fix EVERYTHING.

You’ve already put thought, time, and care into what you’re building.

If someone found your brand today, would they understand what you do… or would they still need you to explain it?
