Lessons from Genesis: Applying God’s Word to Life and Business

As I journey through the Bible this year, I’m continually awe by the timeless wisdom and lessons found in Scripture. It really is the "living word" of God. Having just completed the book of Genesis for the second time (I read it in 2024 as well), I’m reflecting on how much it teaches us—not just about God’s plan for humanity, but also about purpose, obedience, and faith. These lessons have practical applications in our spiritual walk, relationships, and even how we operate in life and business.

Here are my top takeaways from Genesis and how you can apply them:

1. We Are Created with Purpose

Genesis reminds us that we are made "in the image and likeness of God" (Genesis 1:27). This isn’t just about physical resemblance; it’s a call to:

  • Represent God’s purpose in history.

  • Rule on His behalf with authority.

  • Reproduce His presence on earth in everything we do.

Application: Think about how you’re using your God-given gifts and influence. Are you showing up in a way that reflects His purpose? Whether in business, ministry, or family life, remember that your actions are a reflection of God’s character.

2. Obedience is Greater Than Understanding

The story of the tree of knowledge of good and evil (Genesis 3) is a powerful reminder that disobedience stems from trusting our own understanding over God’s Word. Every time we rely on “what seems good” to us rather than what God says, we risk stepping out of alignment with His will.

Application: Before making decisions, ask: Is this what God has called me to, or am I leaning on my own desires? Trust that God’s plan is better, even when you can’t see the full picture.

3. Preparation Precedes Promises

Joseph’s story (Genesis 37-50) is a masterclass in trusting the process. Though he faced betrayal, slavery, and imprisonment, these trials were all part of God’s plan to prepare him for leadership. Tony Evans says it best: "The delay is for preparation, not punishment."

Application: If you’re waiting for a breakthrough, don’t waste the waiting season. Instead, focus on how God is shaping you and preparing you for the next level. Remember: His timing is perfect.

4. Returning to God Requires Three Steps

Genesis 35:2 outlines three steps Jacob took to return to God, which we can all follow:

  1. Get Rid of Idols: Let go of anything that takes priority over God.

  2. Purify Yourself: Remove sin from your life and seek holiness.

  3. Change Your Clothes: Transform your mindset, environment, and daily habits to align with God’s will.

Application: Reflect on what idols, habits, or influences might be pulling you away from God. What steps can you take today to realign yourself with Him?

5. God Will Test You Before Elevating You

Genesis 22 tells the story of Abraham being asked to sacrifice Isaac. This wasn’t about God needing the sacrifice; it was about testing Abraham’s faith and obedience.

Application: When you face challenges, ask: Is this a test of my faith? Trust that God’s tests are designed to refine you, not to harm you. He’s preparing you for something greater.

Genesis is a book of beginnings, but its lessons are timeless. From understanding our purpose to trusting God’s process, every chapter offers wisdom that can transform our lives and businesses.
